Information About Nature's Crossroads
Presented by Team Coordinator Maggie Sullivan
At Nature's Crossroads, our purpose is to provide gardeners in
Indiana and surrounding states with the organic/Earth-friendly seeds,
fertilizers and supplies that make sense for where we grow.
We believe that gardening is a great way to improve the environment, beautify our homes, get some exercise, and play in the dirt while providing healthy food for our families
OUR PHILOSOPHY: We believe in running a company that is good for the community, good for the earth, and economically viable. Our mission is to rebuild the supply of locally grown, locally adapted, Earth-friendly seeds for farmers and gardeners in Indiana and surrounding states. We are working to build a network of seed savers (farmers and gardeners) as well as a community of organic gardeners and farmers to turn those seeds into food for their families and communities.
OUR TEAM: Nature's Crossroads was founded by two Hoosier farmers, Art Sherwood
and Jeff Evard, who have many years of growing experience and are passionate food activists. Art works as the company's General Manager and Jeff is the Chief Agronomist. Both are also co-managers of our sister business, LIFE Certified Organic Farm, which grows and tests many of our seed varieties. There are several more wonderful
Hoosiers working to make Nature's Crossroads successful including our
Internet Sales Manager Maggie Sullivan, our Fundraiser Goddess Laura
Brown-Cano, our Operations Manager Bobbi Boos, and Head Designer Gwen Fluhr. Our offices are in a
funky historic building on south Walnut Street in Bloomington. You can read more about our team members in our press room. Looking for a green job? Check out our job opportunities page.
OUR HISTORY:
Nature's Crossroads was envisioned in 2007 and ran a few pilot programs
before officially opening for the 2010 growing season. This year we
offered seeds through our web store, in 17 select retail stores around
Indiana, and through school fundraisers at four local schools. We also
supported over 60 gardening organizations in the Midwest through
fundraisers or seed donations.
WHAT WE DO: We sell seeds and gardening
supplies through three major channels - our internet store, our school
fundraiser program, and through retail stores (like small groceries and
garden centers) in Indiana and surrounding states.
OUR SEEDS: Our focus is to offer Earth-friendly and locally grown seeds. We work hard to clearly communicate where our seeds come from and how they were grown. The vast majority of our seeds are certified organic but as we expand our network of local growers, we are adding in varieties that were grown in an Earth-friendly manner but are not certified organic. Likewise, we are working every year to expand our selection of locally grown seeds (we are projecting 40% local for 2011) but also carry a selection of seeds purchased from growers in other regions. All the varieties we carry were chosen for their ability to thrive in the Midwest (Indiana) climate. They will perform well in any Zone 5 area. All our seeds are GMO-free and we have signed the Safe Seed Pledge.
THE FUTURE: We look forward to continued growth in 2011, in terms of both sales and local seed suppliers. We have several exciting new projects and products in the works including seed packets from our Backyard Seed Savers Program, rare varieties of chiles from our new seed saving partnership with the Chile Woman, an art contest for Indiana artists to create collectible seed packets for some of our favorite varieties, a program for custom growing certified organic heirloom tomato plants, and an expansion of our retail program into states neighboring Indiana. We hope you will grow with us!
